Block 2
Ta-dah! Here is block 2 in the Sew Let’s Quilt Along and how cute is this mug block?! Head on over to Janda Bend Quilts to download the pattern.

While April’s pattern calls for printed or embroidered lettering and I have an absolute thing about words on quilts, I decided to fussy cut the central panel of the mug. My printer is currently having problems printing just with black ink and no one can quite figure out why. (And yes, I have replaced the cartridge. Twice!) I’ve been looking for a project to showcase this pretty fabric for quite a while and with that lovely big centre, April’s mug seemed just perfect!
Getting started . . .
This mug block is a quick, straightforward pattern but as always you will get best results with accurately cut pieces and an exact 1/4″ seam allowance. If you need tips on how to do this, my test your seam allowance post will help!

When it comes to cutting out your pieces, if you are using a directional print carefully consider the orientation before cutting. You will see below that some of my stripes are cut vertically and some horizontally depending on how the piece will be positioned in the final layout.
If you are printing the words onto your block, you will need to do so before you begin any sewing.
Shaping the Mug Base
You create the base of the mug with stitch and flip corners but you’re all very familiar with those after completing the sewing machine pattern, right?! If not, check out my section on ‘Stitch And Flip Corners’ in the block one post!
To recap in brief, rule diagonal lines on the reverse of the background squares and stitch just within those lines.

Trim off the corners leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance and press seams open so you have a mug base that looks something like this.

In block 2, the handle is then pieced separately and the two units are joined together. Once you’ve added a couple of pieces to the top and bottom, your block is done!
