Free drawstring bag pattern
I wanted to share this free drawstring bag pattern with you. I have been making these bags for a few years now and I just love them! These cute bags are SO quick to make and a GREAT beginner’s pattern. They make lovely gifts and are just ideal for containing all the paraphernalia that children come with!
The bags are lined and bound around the top. At 14″ wide by 17″ tall, they are perfectly sized for kid’s gym kits or to carry a spare set of clothes given they will inevitably find a puddle to fall in, or is that just my lot? My youngest used to carry an armful of plastic animals around in hers but that was when she was wee. Now she carries an armful of stuffed toys around with her but at least they’re easier to find when they get stuck down the side of the car seat.
This pattern is a super show-case for medium or large print fabrics, y’know those fabrics that have been kicking about in your stash for the longest time but are just too delicious to get rid off! I went through a phase of purchasing wildly impractical, but totally divine, fabrics. This bag was devised initially to make inroads into this stash. I have made bags with everything from dinosaurs to daisies.
The gorgeous Matryoshka range from Riley Blake Designs was used in both these bags. If you look carefully though, you’ll see that the second bag has a different accent fabric.
(This was my cunning plan as both my daughters were clamouring for the matryoshka fabric and yet, with subtle differentiation, I hope to avoid a weekly drama when one goes off with the other’s PE kit!!)
Riley Blake Designs have brought out a special festive version of this fabric, Merry Matryoshka which would make adorable Christmas gift bags.
