I knew right from the start what I was doing for the March block of the Calendar Quilt. Shamrocks, hares (mad ones) and daffodils, so this block should have gone quickly. Except it didn’t. I couldn’t get fabrics I was happy with for the hares. The first lot were too decorative. I wasn’t sure the eyes would be prominent enough.
The second lot were too dark. I worried the whiskers wouldn’t show up!
The third attempt should, by the standards of nursery tales, have been just right but I was concerned this one was too pale. It wouldn’t stand out against the background. I did love the pretty fabric though!
After spending a bit more of my life cutting out March hares and then fretting about them, I settled on this pair for my leaping little brown hares!
The daffodils were from the design of a quilt I made for my mother-in-law which I never released as a pattern. You can read about that daffodil quilt here.
I had to add shamrocks. I just had to.
So finally, it’s done and in the end I am happy with the block. I have lots of discarded hares scattered around my sewing room which is giving me plenty of ideas for new projects, funny how things turn out! Still, I’m off for a stiff drink before I begin on the April block. . .
