It’s been so long since I last posted and I wonder where all the time could possibly have gone to!
I have been sewing away busily though even if this little blog has been gathering dust. I am delighted to finally show you this bird block. (You can get your pdf copy now in my shop.)
This is such a quick block to sew and is so readily customised! You could make a festive robin or a Halloween wall-hanging of grey and black ravens. A table topper of summer swallows would be stunning and how cute would a baby quilt be!? As you can see, I couldn’t stop making bird blocks!

The Littlest One picked a Moda Chantilly layer cake as she reckoned she was about due a new quilt for her room. Especially as she has just past her tenth birthday!
The block is traditionally pieced and, as it’s based around 2.5″ inch pieces, it’s great for using up left-over precut pieces.
The bird block finishes up at 10″ x 12.5″ so with a simple border it would make a super pillow cover. I intend to make up this block into a pillow for my studio chair but I haven’t completed it just yet.

In time, I will sew all the ‘Chantilly’ bird blocks into a twin size quilt for the Littlest One. At the minute it’s on hold though as I’m working on a new Christmas project. There will be a new post following soon to let you know how you can get your hands on a free copy!
I’m also in the middle of designing a baby quilt for my niece and it is animal themed too. I wonder what animals you most like on quilts? I can’t wait to start sewing this project! I’ll show you the first few blocks as soon as they’re stitched.
Linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict, Tish in Wonderland, TGIFF and Finished or not Friday.
In the meantime, whatever you’re working on, happy sewing! xx
This is such a cute block, and you are right, it’s so versatile. It would make a cute runner, with a bird at each end!
Thanks, Wendy! I love your table runner idea, that’s another project to add to the long list of ‘to-do’s! x
I love your bird block! Seeing the variations using different fabrics is so much fun! The pastel birds are so pretty!
Thank you, Jayne! I had lots of fun sewing up my little flock!
This is adorable. I have a picture of a great little bird, that has such “tula pink” colors that I have wanted to make. Love birds and bird quilts and your daughters new quilt will be fab!
Thanks Kathleen, for your lovely comments, a ‘Tula Pink’ bird sounds fabulous!
Love this bird block! What great ideas as to how to use them too.
Thanks, Jean! I’m really pleased you enjoyed the post!
This is super cute! I LOVE animal quilts! I’ve made elephants, cats, turtles, butterflies, panda, ocean creatures…lots!
Wow, Emily, that’s a lot of quilts! My youngest was crazy about pandas when she was very young so I have such a soft spot for them now!
This is so fun! I’ll have to check out the pattern.
Thanks, Andrea, I’m delighted you like it. Thanks for stopping by! x
Such a darling bird Sandra! And Little One has good taste, she will treasure her quilt.
Thanks, Abbie, she is so excited! x
I ordered a Flying Bird block because it will be a perfect block to make a small pillow for someone for Christmas 🙂
Oooh! Can’t wait to see it, Abbie! x
☺️
What a beautiful flock of birds!
Thank you, Susan! I’m looking forward to seeing this quilt finished.
What a sweet block! I am sure it can be colored to represent all kinds of little birds. Thanks for linking to TGiFF!
Thanks, Chris for your kind comments and for stopping by!
