Inspiration
The idea for this Alphabet quilt pattern came from a conversation with a friend about a mouse problem she was having. I thought about mice and I thought about the quilts that I have stored in my home. I thought about how mice would scamper about and wondered what they would think of my quilts! We do not have mice but we do have this little creature!
I haven’t seen much evidence of her thinking though, mostly she just eats stuff that’s edible and tries to eat stuff that’s inedible and sleeps a lot. We do love her though!
Violation
I drafted out a few little mice sketches. I wanted them to frolic about on the Alphabet quilt. Alas, dear reader, I then recklessly left the sketches on the table. Near a box of felt-tips. I returned to find this.
All I can say is, it’s a good job kids are so cute!
Justification
I used a whole range of different coloured backgrounds from ivory through cream to tan and brown. Partly this is to justify my ever growing stash and partly because I love the scrappy feel of the quilt. I remember as a child being so aware of all the furnishings of my bedroom so I wanted there to be a lot of visual interest.
Elaboration
I kept the quilting simple with outline quilting of each letter and mouse. I quilted double parallel lines in the outer borders and finally, I quilted diamonds into each pinwheel block.
Illustration
There are five mice in total scattered about the Alphabet quilt, here are some close-ups.

Each letter is approx. 3.5″ tall. The quilt is cot size so you could use it for bedding and then hang it on the wall as the child becomes more aware of their surroundings and grows out of their cot! The little mice noses could be stitched in with satin stitch if you want to avoid buttons.
I love how stitching in the details of the tails and whiskers seem to make the mice come alive!
If someone you love is expecting a baby then this Alphabet quilt would be a fantastic gift for the new arrival. It’s educational and super cute! It’s a great stash-busting project and is such fun to sew up!
Pattern includes full-size applique templates and detailed, illustrated instructions.
