The pattern contains instructions to make both a left and right facing cardinal bird. The two options make the pattern much more versatile. You could make multiple quilt blocks for a full-size cardinal quilt or a three block Christmas table runner. Two of my pattern testers used a single block as the centre of a Christmas pillow.
The cardinal quilt block is constructed with basic patchwork techniques which include sewing rectangles and squares together, half-square triangles, and a single flying geese unit. The optional branches and leaf are added after the block is completed using simple machine applique.
The ten page pattern comes with detailed step-by-step instructions, illustrated where necessary. Templates are provided for reference for both the left and right facing birds. Full size applique templates are also included for the branches and leaf.
