This Christmas angel wall hanging grew from the block I designed for the ‘I wish you a Merry Quilt Along’.
(If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s definitely worth a look. The patterns are still available for another few weeks and it’s great fun looking at all the different versions the quilters have made.)
I was pleased with my cheery little angel and wanted to base a quilt design around her. After doodling a few different ideas I liked the image of a tumbling angel having an oops! moment as she dangles off the star.
With some simple piecing in the borders and fast machine appliqué, the quilt came together in no time.
The finished quilt is suitable for either a Christmas wall hanging, or a table topper, mine fits perfectly in our dining room against a red feature wall.
It’s fun choosing all the prints for the angels and their wings.
Sadly the glittery silver fabrics I used do not show up well in photos. I used a scrap of silver shot silk for the wings (left over from a sparkly cocktail dress I made before I had kids and had the time, and the figure, for such indulgences!).
The stars were made with luxurious silver lamé.
I was initially stuck on how to quilt the angel wall hanging. I wanted to capture the movement of the angels as they fluttered around the stars so I choose a pattern of irregular wavy lines. I was happy with how it turned out.
For the borders, I decided to free-motion quilt a holly and berry pattern on the angel wall hanging. Free motion quilting is NOT my comfort zone but I reassured myself than it wouldn’t be very visible on such a patterned border. I doodled curving hollies and berries over a few bits of paper and then I began.
To my great surprise, it was, more or less, ok! It’s rather a shame it is not more visible! My FMQ is definitely improving!
Enjoy some creative ‘me-time’ this festive season!
The nine page pattern comes with full size appliqué motifs, detailed concise instructions which are illustrated where appropriate.
It is an easy, quick project that is suitable for those with limited quilting experience but who have made at least one quilt before.
You can get your own digital copy of this pattern NOW from my shop.

Oh Sandra I love this! Your FMQ looks great and I’m happy your angels can have cocktail dress wings 🙂
Thanks so much, Abbie! I suppose there is something a bit subversive about making angel wings out of sparkly party dress remnants!!
This is so cute! I love the sparkly fabric.
Thank you! You can never have enough sparkle at Christmas I reckon.
Cute indeed! Glad the “oops” in the title wasn’t an error being reported. Love the tumbling angel.
